Blooming Poets

Introducing: Waters’ very own poetry squad! Last week, I got the honor of spending my first week with some 6th graders. We began by sharing what we already know about poetry. Some students shared that they can find poetry in their favorite songs, like the rhyming in the Backstreet Boys song “I Want It That Way.” After a brief overview on what we know, students drafted their own poems about their favorite activities. Read some of them below:

Ms. Smallwood, 6th Grade

Volleyball MJ Q.

I like playing volleyball,

Volleyball is me

When I play volleyball I feel

free. Playing volleyball looks

like me focusing on the ball,

If I can’t play volleyball, I’ll

feel locked.

Drawing Everleigh H.

I love to draw

It’s a fun way to show creativity

When I draw, my hands move fast

across the snowy white paper

When I don’t draw, I zone out,

which is why I always doodle

Drawing is fun because you don’t

have to be good.

You should draw to show inner creativity.

Drawing is amazing.

A Walk In The Park Reagan K.

A walk in the park

The wind on your face

It leaves a park

In the place

You will hear the bark

The people throw

All of the toys

They pick up snow

and they run far away

but they always come back

It will warm your heart

And then you will find

Your way back

To the path

you were always on

Ms. Roman, 6th Grade

I Love To Bake Nora J.

I love to bake

Baking in my kitchen looks

like cookie dough or brownie

batter covering the counter

smells wafting from the oven

When I don’t bake, I feel bored

Without anything to do

I wish more people tried it

baking

I mean, it’s so fun!

and ends up with desserts.

Yum.

Untitled Kender D.

I like basketball

It looks like a smooth jump

It’s like a slam dunk

When I play basketball

I feel joy

When I can play basketball

I’m bored, I feel as stiff as a board

Basketball makes me happy and that’s

why I think it’s for everybody

Soccer Lilah K.

I like to play soccer

Soccer looks like me kicking a ball

Soccer looks like me taking my shot

Soccer looks like me helping my teammates

Without soccer I feel enclosed

Without it I’m held back

Soccer released my energy

It feeds my entertainment

Without soccer I feel enclosed

Without soccer a barrier encloses me in boredom.
