‘The Monster in My Closet’: Night Poems

Students considered what happens at night, the concept of home, and short forms before penning their own poems inspired by Li Bai’s ‘Quiet Night Thoughts.’

Quiet Night Thought
At the foot of my bed, moonlight
Yes, I suppose there is frost on the ground.
Lifting my head I gaze at the bright moon
Bowing my head, thinking of home.

Yí shì dìshang shuāng
Jǔtóu wàng míngyuè

靜夜思
床前明月光
疑是地上霜
舉頭望明月
低頭思故鄉

As I go in my bed, Silence

I go through my thoughts

I imagine my dream life

The last thing I see,

My white blank wall.

Night by Hillary V.M.

The pillows look fluffy and ready

Cars passing by and honking.

Thinking about food while I sleep

Hoping to not have school the next day…

The Monster In My Closet by Abigail K.

Looking at my closet doors

Hoping the monster doesn’t come out

And eat me while I’m sleeping

I used to think a ghost lived in my closet

My friend and I thought so

I hope she’s doing well

I can hear the train rumbling

I think about the people who are still on the train

Working late

Night by Wallace S.

I try to sleep

But my brain won’t stop

A clock ticks, my dog walks another hour

Two more to go…

Coming home to their families

My family is upstairs

If they’re still awake

I can hear my brother yelling

He’s probably screaming at the TV

Watching a game show or sports

I stay up really late when the Bears play

I like the Bears

My throat begs for water

I don’t want to roll over

But I will because

I just will

Good night

Don’t let the bed bugs bite

Going To Sleep by Charles H.

I see my bed, because I’m in it.

The wind wooshing through the crack of my window.

I close my eyes so I can sleep.

Hoping tomorrow’s a good day

Sleepless by Penny M.

The light from the window next door creeps in

I have nothing else to look at besides my phone

I don’t want to stay up late on it

Let’s see how long that promise lasts.
