The poets from Latino Youth High School completed an exercise in one of the most used literary devices in poetry, alliteration. We studied some lyrics from the song “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugar Hill Gang in which the first rapper, Wonder Mike, uses alliteration to capture the ear of the audience. Here we discussed the audible quality of poetry, how poetry is meant to be heard as much as it is meant to be read. Though alliteration is categorized as a literary device, it is through hearing the alliteration that one appreciates the way it used to engage the ear of the reader. After studying some classic tongue twisters, the poets were prompted to create their own using their first name. Enjoy!
