A Warm “See Ya Later”

I cannot believe we’ve reached the end of my time together with Waters’ 6th graders! Its been such a surreal time getting to know Ms. Roman and Smallwood’s energetic bunch of students. When we started, I remember the hesitation on my student’s faces about poetry. We’ve gone from not knowing what a stanza is to writing them effortlessly. Students spent our time together flexing their creative muscles and writing about raw emotions like the joys of succeeding at their favorite sports or the grief of growing up. It’s been such an honor to watch my poets blossom.

For our last week together, Ms. Roman’s 6th graders got to learn about spoken word poetry. We watched videos of some of my favorite poets and marveled at their performance styles. Students also got to watch a video of a young Ms. Musu reading poetry from ten years ago. We ended the class with a huge dance party and grooved to some Kendrick Lemar, SZA, and Natasha Bedingfield.

Thank you so much for our time together Waters. It’s been an absolute joy.
