A Re-Telling

Have you ever wanted to change a moment in the past, to right a wrong or intervene on behalf of someone? The 7th and 8th graders of Waters asked themselves this question after reading “four boys on Ellis [a re-telling]” by Eve L. Ewing. After exploring possible fantastical or supernatural items or powers that could help them, students wrote poems that re-told a moment from their past but with a new ending.

Parents Sami C.

My parents went somewhere

without me because

they said I was

too young and

I was really sad

so I died a little inside

then I decided to give them

a potion that

made them say that

I could go on

the trip with

them so I was very happy

Re-Telling Roberto M.

The vase falls

shattered, exploding

mom coming

When I was 10 I tried to grab something

I knocked over a vase, it shattered

I took a hammer and tapped

it against the shards as it repaired

itself.

The Stairs [a re-telling] Alex H.

As I was walking down the stairs

my sister was in front of me

she was going slow

and I was mad

She was going slow

I was mad

I pushed her

she tumbled down

And then I said

the magic words

she floated

and was unharmed

Up, Up, Down, Down Aiden A.

Once in a lifetime, I could zipline

At a party I was so excited to zipline.

But when I as about to go up, up

I went down to the ground.

After lunch I cried on the inside

Why did I not want to ride?

So, I made a tech for my glasses

where height won’t be a fear.

I used it next time,

And went up like I was fearless!

Down I went and I had to cheer

for I conquered my fear.

Ms. Hernandez (8th Grade)

I hate leaving places Theda S.

I hate leaving Nona’s

I hated leaving France

I hate how after every sleepover

I leave with a chance

A chance of how can time be short when you’re having fun?

A chance that you can stretch out time with only just two gloves.

Maybe a freak time machine would let me stay all day

but would I want to replace moments that were always meant to stay

or would a little liquid take the all the hate away

but happiness will always just be taken and replaced with pain

The pain of knowing leaving will always be wrong

The pain of forgetting an old favorite song.

The fragile sign your leaving it all behind

but you will just turn and wave goodbye

Maybe teleportation would take the pain away easy

now no more silent goodbyes and loud sneezy cries

just the sound of whoosh and very pretty skies

Car Crash Simon A.

The highway slowed to a stop, and the loud angry

highway was silenced by stopping. People got out of

their cars, looking at what was ahead.

The car had been split by the guardrail, and

a kid and his mother laying on the side of the road. The kid

seemed empty, on the ground and flat. His mother by his side

trying to hold what was left of him.

I stopped in my tracks, looking at the little child, when

a dragon appeared. A dragon with the heavy whip

of a wing flew down and picked him up. The kid

suddenly breathed with life, grabbed his mother and

took off. Everyone started to cheer, yelling and supporting

the once silent boy. It was over. The kid piloting the

dragon somewhere far, far, away.

Michigan vs. Oklahoma Sam S.

We walk into the stadium.

Me, Julian, and my grandparents.

Saturday night game!

Michigan vs. Oklahoma.

In Oklahoma, Norman.

Michigan losing early.

Then it is halftime.

Still losing by a little.

Suddenly when the teams come out something changed.

That is because of my skill zapper.

I stole the Oklahoma player’s talent.

Michigan starts to win.

By the end of the game Michigan won!

All thanks to my skill zapper!

Monday Elijah H.

Water drips in the kitchen.

You could hear the hum of the

an in the living room.

It’s quiet, too quiet.

You wake up noticing the silence.

It’s always loud but the silence is soothing.

BOOM!

Noise fills up the atmosphere with no

sign of stopping. You hear cars, voices, and

the sound off the booming wind outside

your window…Then you realize the

bitter truth…it’s a Monday…

The Magic Meet Up Nathan G.

When me and my friend

were about to turn 10

in 4th grade his parents

made him move away

with them. I was

very sad and wished he could stay in my neighborhood.

I forgot to mention one

thing. Me and my friennd

have amazinng super

powers. So when his parent’s gave

him an alright curfew

he would come to my

town of Chicago. We

would talk to each other for a

long time and when

we weren’t talking

to each other we

would fight crime

until 6:00.
