A Day at the Movies

This week the young Viking writers approached poetry through a cinematic lens. We read Robert Polito’s “Please Refrain from Talking During the Movies” and Eileen Myles’ “Movie.” We brainstormed what type of movie our lives would be, what soundtrack, what settings. I’m so thrilled with these extremely talented writers.

Suddenly I See Aria A.
I walk down the streets of Chicago
carrying nothing but my phone and smoothie
“You’re So Vain” radiates through my AirPods
I watch as cars whizz by with no care
stuck in a world of fantasy and what ifs
I’ve always pretended I was the main character in a romcom
wearing my converse with pride
and shuffling through Spotify songs
I never needed it to become my reality
because I already hold so much love for those around
as I walk, listen to the sounds of the city
people talking
police cars zooming by
dogs barking
birds chirping
everything that makes up my life
because my life is more than just me
it’s everything that makes up Chicago
but with a cute blue ribbon keeping it together
the song fades out…
Flower Garden Caden S.
Action.
I close my eyes and dream about a flower garden.
Her drifting rose tinted aroma blooming a lush color grade
as a blush starts to fade in like a sun-kissed rise.
I run my finger down her petals as she follows with her eyes.
My figure over here like ants under clouds in the sky.
Our silhouettes intertwining as her nails embed in the roots of my mind.
The winds whirl around singing slow songs.
The birds and bees harmonize with Faiyaz in gentle bliss.
Unburdened by the whispers and rainfall.
Entranced by her petrichor stained tulips.
The feeling turns numb
as my soliloquy drifts awake.
Losing the grasp of the grasses
longing of my name.
I open my eyes from a dream about a flower garden.
Cut.

Lazy Anonymous
I have shortly lived passion
who is dumber than a rock
I laze around my room
waiting for someone to save me
waited every day for 5 years
I wish to be better
I want to do something
I grew up with split marriage
moved here with my mother
I don’t have much
I’m like a stray cat who can’t hunt
far from my problems until my legs fail me
I’m a bird without wings
or a bird without eyes
or maybe I’m just human
