Fish, You’re Dancing A Lullaby

This week I had to distinct pleasure of writing poems to music with the Moos Elementary 4th, 5th, & 6th Graders. As part of the Poetry Center’s Collaboration with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, our students are listening to movements from Carnival of the Animals and creating poems for the animals in the music. In these classes we worked on songs for Donkeys, Cuckoos, and Tortoises. Enjoy!

Dead Dancing Fish by Mariah E.

Down in Dead Fish Cemetery
The fish came out to dance.
They dance all night,
All the way to dawn,
When they go to sleep,
Until the night again.

Aquarium by James G.

Oh my Oh my fish you’re dancing a lullaby
Going side to side and jumping up and down
Very silly but not sleepy the mom says
Its bedtime, the little fishes say its Saturday

Aquarium by Kimberly V.

There was a school of fishes going
to a dark place in the ocean.
The fishes said, “no, please.”

March of the Royal Lions by Mariah C.

The lion was
crowned on the savannah
so we celebrated
we have lions and
elephants in dresses
dancing around and
the cheetahs come
out sneaking and
the royal lion comes out
with his coat and cane

Marching With The Lions by Christopher A.

I am the king of the beasts
I will be the best
there will every be
I am the best fighter
In UFC, I am the beast
I will kill any beast
that goes in my feast.
I dance, like shuffling,
break dancing.
I know I am fancy.
I am a cat.

March of the Royal Lion by Alejandro G.

As the lion prepares to
be crowned in front of
his future subjects,
he struggles as he
prepares.

Aquarium by Tyler E.

The fish in the song is swimming with its friends
This fish in the song is happy that he has lots of friends
This fish in the song is playing with its friend
This fish in the song is in a nice reef, eating and joyful
The fish in the song is having fun with his brother and sister
This fish in the song is playing with his mom and dad
This fish in the song is happy
This fish in the song is eating food
This fish in the song is socializing with his friends

Untitled by Jocelyn

The sky was blue
The sun shining
and there were
two best friends that
did everything together
One little fish was blue with small wings
and the other one was
gold with yellow wings
Everyone wanted to be with
him and his best friend Edward
was jealous but the golden
fish left with the blue fish
and they were happy ever after

Aquarium by Steven D.

The fish are swimming.
The a shark comes.
The share is chasing the fish.
Then the shark eats the fish.
