4th graders get musical with haikus!

For their 7th poetry lesson, Twain 4th graders discovered haiku poems. Haiku is a short Japanese poem that only has three lines. The first line has 5 syllables, 7 in the second, and 5 in the third. Usually, haikus are about nature, but our theme for this week was music. The majority of 4th graders have played instruments such as the piano, flute, drums, guitar, violin, and even the ukulele.

Together we read the poem “Haiku,” by DJ Renegade. The poet described how he feels about Jazz. Jazz is the way/ brown sugar would sound if it was/ sprinkled in your ear. Music has the power to make us feel many emotions and expand our imaginations. To help students brainstorm ideas about music, we listened to the playlists I created, which showcased songs from different musical genres such as Hip-Hop, Jazz, Rock, Classical, Reggae, Rap, and Pop. Students wrote how the songs made them feel and turned their brainstorms into haiku poems.

Readers will definitely enjoy jamming to these musical haikus by Twain 4th graders.
