“Over the moon…”

Last week Swift 2nd graders performed collaborative poetry and music in a special morning assembly for family and community as part of the school’s partnership with Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I was very moved to see their creativity on display, in fact, you could say that I was “over the moon!” Unfortunately, I am not authorized to share photos of students on this blog, but – trust me – they did a fantastic job and were dressed-up wonderfully for the special occasion. I was grateful that students were willing to save some energy for our afternoon sessions, in which we read Kathi Mitchell’s poem, “Under the Sky,” and composed some poems using the prompts “inside my imagination…,” “wrapped up in a blanket…,” and “over the moon…”

Inside my imagination is a brain
inside my brain is a charger that gives me ideas
Inside my charger is electricity
thinking electricity
and inside that electricity is power
that keeps me active for thinking and
talking to my brain

Shreya C.

Wrapped up in a blanket is a teddy
And wrapped in the teddy are beads that dance

Inside the beads are swirly marbles bumping
Into each other
And inside the marbles are foil
Marbles like a juicy round orange

Over the moon are cheesy flowers
and over the cheesy flowers lies
Natalie’s nutella dreams

and over those nutella dreams are
blue balloons
and inside the blue balloons are
red hearts and outer space

and outer space holds stars
stars of water and shininess
heart-filled stars, fingers, and
thumbs-up balloons
wearing shoes.

“What do unicorns do?
By Valentina C.

Inside my imagination are unicorns
eating cotton candy
The unicorns are fluffy and pink
like a pom-pom.

They went across the street
to Unicorn land
a place where they decided
to go to Unicorn School
and take Essential classes like
