‘…like police crossing tape’: Working with Simile

We explored simile in Michael Ondaaje’s poem, Sweet Like A Crow. We also talked about using epigraphs and dedications in verse. Students created poems in praise of someone or something!

Lesson Note: Students played the Pictionary-style game, ‘Draw That Simile’ to get their creative wheels turning. Incorporating creative play in the daily work of writing, gets us using Right and Left Brain activity to ignite Flow.

-For A.

You are as bright as a star,
As calm as the sea, like a gust of wind on
a hot summer day. Like birds chirping in the
morning., like a whale singing, as large as life.
Your smile is as beautiful as the sunset, your eyes are
as dark as the moon, and your personality as big as
the sun. Like a baby held in her mother’s arms, as if
day and night were mixed together making a cool, smooth
feeling in your body.

-For my favorite band, 1975

Your music is as tight as a petticoat
Your songs are as loud like a crowd huddle together
like smooth as dough
You sing like an angel in the sky
You shine bright like a pearl in the ocean
Your voice is like music to my ears
like people dancing on a Friday night
You are like a candel llit in a dark room
Your energy is as positive as a wise
woman

His form is like a lever ready to pull
Lebron James is like a scoring machine ready to win
His pain painful its felt amongst many
Lebron is injured and out for 2 weeks yet it’s like an eternity
Lebron does many things to bring his team back in the picture
but there’s a barrier like police crossing tape
and it’s trying with all it’s kmight o stop Lebron

-For Sofia, 8 months old

Your smile as bright as the sun
can light up a room like a light bulb in the living room.
When your smile fades, it’s like the sun being covered by clouds
and the world darkens.
When you laugh, you sound like an angel playing a harp.
Your skin is as smooth as butter, as soft as silk.
When you get upset, it feels as if the sky is gonna fall,
just like a rocketship when it’s coming back down to the
atmosphere.

Summer
Lizbeth N.

You are as exciting as the day we have
outdoor recess for the first time in months,
a fun as going to the beach on a scorching day
and jumping in the cold water,
as cool as meeting a celebrity.
Like when your teacher lets you work in
partners,
as hot as a scortching desert.
People’ll be as thirsty as a plant
is in a desert.

Spring
Yahir C.

You’re as warm and cozy as having
Hot cocoa on a winter day.
It’s as rainy as taking a shower
for 2 hours.
It’s as fun as playing in the gross.
but also as annoying as trying
to hit mosquitos.
