Image, Imagination, Imagery!

So far – in addition to covering LINE, STANZA, and SIMILE – 3rd graders at Twain have learned that poems can be inspired by likes [and dislikes], as well as curiosities and dreams. Today we talked about “out-of-the-box thinking,” and looked at the word IMAGERY for clues about our sessions’s focus. Right away students said they were reminded of the words image and imagination. We talked about how poets aim to paint vivid pictures (images) with words, and read “I Would Like to See,” by Ethan B., a student poet. Together we brainstormed lists of nouns (including emotions and furniture) that could be linked with other nouns to create unusual images in our minds. What do you notice about the linking words or phrases?

whose supposed to bat
but flies to space
to win a race
for $46,741 bucks
