I Was Scared, Not Anymore

Students read “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” by Maya Angelou, and wrote poems about their fears, overcoming them and ways they will help help protect others and help them overcome fear. In the words of a student poet, sometimes fear won’t let go: “I try to let it go but it is sticking to me like glue its gloomy” (Abigail R), but with poetry as a tool we are learning to face our fears…face fear with us!

Nervous

By, Tahlia P.

I was nervous.

I met my classmates for the first time in 4th grade.

When I met them I got nervous,as if I was the only new one.

I didn’t know if everyone wanted to be friends with me

or if they would like me.

So, I asked this one new girl

and I said, “Do you want to hang out?”

And she said yes, and then we were friends.

I’m not nervous anymore.

When your lost in the darkness look for the light

I woke at night feeling fright. I left the light with nothing bright.

I made a stream of tears and screams feeling a large pain of terror and grief.

I found a switch and felt relieved.

Me and the Light

By Maramene W.

Myself worrisome, of the darkness

Consuming me, eating me.

But I don’t fret, my light is here

I’d go in the ocean swimming my life away

Leaving the evil behind I don’t worry,

My light is here!

I see a creature, I’d go slice!

Shadows in the dark, the go in the light.

I’m in the sky not caring of what happens to me.

Sure, my charm doesn’t open. But except

                           I express

My light, expresses them for me, helping me

no matter where I go, maybe beyond the sun?

Who knows? But I have my light!

My light

     is

always with me

From my dreams

to my heart

       My light

When I Felt Afraid

Juan A.

  When I felt afraid,

                                I fell off my bike,

  I felt a sharp pain

When I fell on a spike.

When I felt afraid,

  I saw a spider,

It wasn’t only one, it was a group,

Now in my dreams, it looks like multiple troops.

When I felt afraid,

I saw a dark figure in my room,

It’s always there,

Behind my door.

When I felt afraid,

  I had to score,

Now that we won,

I don’t feel afraid anymore.

I Am Just Human

Sarah B.

Today I lost my game.

Was it my fault?

No…

I tried my best

It’s my turn to present

But i’m so nervous

It’s okay…

You got this!!

I want to post this video

What if my friends see it?

Who cares?!

Just go for it!

My outfit is the worst.

I think I might just stay home.

No it’s not.

You look awesome!

Am I weird for having

all of these emotions?

Of course not!

I’m just    human.

Speaking in front of a classroom

A classroom full of students

It’s not easy for me

Hearing stories about embarrassing things

Embarrassing things that happen while talking

I got all that in my head. Thinking someone

Was going to say something to me.

I felt sad and devastated, so i told my mom

My mom said it was okay to feel embarrassed

But that I should feel proud of my work

That i was presenting

She said i need to have courage and

Pride in all the hard work I put in

Since that week in 4th grade I have

Been practicing talking in front of people

I have been talking in front of teachers too

Coming over a fear is not easy for me But with a little bit of encouragement

And hard work

I can do anything I put my mind to.

Learning How to Ride My Bike

Adamaris H

I will try, I can, and I know I can

I told myself that when I got afraid

I wanted to learn how to ride my bike

So I told my mom and we waited for summer to come around

I was so nervous but

I can, and I know I can I told myself

It was finally the day I was gonna learn how to ride my bike

I was so afraid

As a few days passed, with the help of my mom and those words I kept telling myself

I will try, I can, and I know I can.

I finally did it.

A Scary Day

Tony P

Home alone,

Everyone gone playing my games

Having much fun

Felt like i was being watched

Turning around

Heard a loud POW!

Getting scared

WHO IS THERE!?

Locking my door

Creeks in the floor

Quietly sneaking

Couldn’t start thinking

Heard someone yawn

Its almost dawn

Walk out my room

IT WAS MY MOM!

Night Walk

Tamia G

Dark scary night, I wanted to take flight

I hear something come from the alley

it was just  some bushes, but I did see some old couch cushions.

I seen a rat the size of a cat…

I jumped so high I wanted to cry

but I kept walking because there was no stopping .

Fear Poem

Marcelo G

I’m older now and I’ve played

baseball for a long time.

They pitch a lot faster now.

It’s like starting all over again.

I fear not being good anymore.

The distance is further, and

I’m not going to be the best

on my team anymore.

But I will train, be better and

eventually I will get used to it.

Then I will be the older one again

helping my younger teammates.

Frozen

Snake in the field

I am FRIGHTENED

Snake on the patio

I am FRIGHTENED

Snake moving in fast

I CANT move

Snake on my shoe

I CANT move

Snake crawling up my pants

I am SHAKING

Snake on my lap

I am SHAKING

Snake slivering up my arm

I want to MOVE

Snake on my shoulder

I want to MOVE

Snake on my face

I stay STILL as a rock

Snake hissing on my face

I stay STILL as a rock

Snake slithers off my face

I feel RELIEF

Snake slithers back onto the ground and onto the field

I feel RELIEF

Snake looks at me as if mocking

I am CONFIDENT

Snake hisses and slithers away into the woods

I am Confident

If you pose no harm

Thesnake doesn’t BITE

If you don’t move

The snake doesn’t BITE

Not Afraid

Not afraid

 I’m not afraid

No not of the

Loud noises

The busy streets

The crowded hallsq

No not even the the writing on the walls

I’m not afraid

The small spaces,

Not afraid of lion’s roar

No i’m not afraid

Not afraid of the clash in the kitchen

No i’m not afraid

No not the thunder

No not the rain falls

Or even when the rain touches the walls

A Home Base Brave

Stepping on home base, challenges i have to face

Pitcher ready to play

I have to be brave

Bat in the air

I can’t be scared

Time time to swing, i must here my bat ding

I have to be brave

Hearing the crowd cheer

While running from there to here

Standing on first base, ready to pace

I have to be brave

Teammate on home base

She has to be brave

Take a Shot

Maya F

When I dribble the ball, and stop, I don’t know what to do

I hate taking a shot because what if I make my team lose?

If I miss, everyone tells me it’s okay

Honestly I just want to walk away

Thump     The ball doesn’t feel right in my hands

Because when I shoot it never lands

The encouraging words make it worse

The tears in my eyes want to burst

            Thump

When I take a shot, my anxiety spikes up

It feels as if my throat grows a lump

Sometimes I manage to score

But it just means they want more

Thump       This is why I hate to take a shot

      The pressure is a lot

         Whooshh

Anxiety

My hands are shaking

I’m really nervous

Were in the sky

Far from surface

Going further into the sky

About to drop

I don’t wanna be here

I wanna get off

It’s Not Safe

Arimaoniy C

                               Kids filing the halls

                  Writing on the walls

                   Is this a safe place?

                   Fire drill lockdown drill

We do this until we stay still

                   Is this a safe place?

                   Another form of stress

                   Everyday at recess

It’s not fun i must confess

It’s definitely not a safe place.

Just Another Fear.

Aeson O

I am scared to go to high school

I didn’t want to say it

Its like moving to a new school

No friends, No directions, and no place to sit

Why should I go

Im just leaving all my friends

But its not the scariest thing

Im worried that I wont talk to them again.

I don’t know my way around

Don’t know any of the teachers

I hope I can adjust

To a new school with no friends.

The Unpredictable Ocean

Ethan N

The ocean is

Terrifying

The ocean

Is

Deep

The ocean has

Millions of

Little

Fish

Or

Big

Fish

The ocean

Always has

Small

Or

Giant

Waves

The ocean

Is fun

But most

Of the

Time

It’s

unpredictable

Scared of the Sea

Aarion C

The one thing i’ve ever been afraid of is

Unexpecting things in the water that only i seen like the giant turtle

Reminding me i’m a scared little boy

Terrified i run out the water screaming crying

Learning to face my fears i walk but in the water with a new attitude

Excited to face my fear i look

What is the Meaning of Being Scared

Nathan C

What is the real meaning

Of being scared.

Is it to have anxiety,

Or is to be very frightening.

What might occur I ask,

Is it to have lots of nerves?

Is it because you might think

You’re in trouble, or is it because

You’re stranded in a jungle.

This is what I think the real

Meaning of being scared is to a teen like me.
