I dedicate this to…

The poets from Latino Youth High School learned about a type of poem called “Ode”. They wrote their own odes to the City and to Love. Enjoy!

From Chicago to the World

J.C.M.

CHICAGO the greatest place in the world from Little Village to the high you feel in mornings east lake wind. The high and low of the hot and cold that reminds you there’s no place like home for Chicago is the greatest place on earth. The love that surrounds me walking the downtown streets while listening to performers that sound like the greats; Sam Cooke, Drake, Prince and smoothest of all the good old magic blues.

“Carmelo”

Anonymous

North Avenue beach is when the sun first hit our eyes.

A tall, brown skin boy

That I called “Carmelo”

Was my love for the summer

Those honey dipped eyes is what I remember

Brown skin looking like caramel under the sun

You were the sweetest, I just couldn’t have you

It came to an end once the sun left us to freeze
