For My People

This week, poets at Poe Middle School in Ms. Agboola’s class read Margaret Walker’s “For My People” and wrote a poem inspired by Walker.

My Swim Team

Laniyah E.

8th g.

My swim team are my people

They’re my family they’re my heart

My swim team gets the job done

They always play their part

I love my swim team dearly

Even though they can be too rough

or too harsh

I’m sad I want to be there

for all the practices

or all the meets

I’ll miss my swim team

And I’m sure they’ll miss me

All the jokes  all the games

All the laughing  all of the playing

My swim team is my heart

They make me whole

They make me feel special

feel perfect They make me whole

My family

Emery J.

7th g.

My family is ok

they get on my

nerves sometimes

but they’re cool

They think that

they have joke

when they act super

surprised

When I respond

in the family

group chat

because I barely

talk in it.

But we do

like to have

contest and

play sports.

But all around

they are cool

to hang around

They’re a great

influence

My Friends

Calvin H.

7th g.

For my friends everywhere singing their chicken songs

making history around the globe.

In small towns that I don’t know

for my friends in the school everyday

making me happy

every second

for my friends at other schools

thanks for making me happy

everyday in previous years.

for my friends in other states

thank you for being great friend

you’ll always be remembered.

For my friend

I love you guys

and I really appreciate you very much.
