Extended Metaphors! BOOM! WHOOSH! (And Onomatopoeias)

At Smyser Elementary, we learned about extended metaphors and onomatopoeias through Maya Marie Washington’s poem “Alien.” Students were tasked with writing their own extended metaphor poem where they turned into one non-human thing. Check out this week’s poems!

Oliver L.

If I were able to change into an object
I would be a skateboard, it’ll be fun
You know why?
I’ll be able to feel the rumble
I’ll be able to fly
Don’t be worried
I can do tricks.
Flipping around as high as I can
I get to remember the time that
I wanted to be a skateboard
Good bye!

My owner gives me dog food.

Vanessa R., “A Heart that Knows What It’s Doing”

I am a heart I know when someone
is “in love” I know when someone
is feeling down I control how they
act. If someone is heartbroken I
can, love, and hate love is a feeling of
happiness hate is a feeling of anger
who ever someone or thing is I can
know how your feeling and all I ever
want is that everyone can feel love
for once and finds a friend that
actually deserves their love and their
gifts when you love or hate, you
will always find your soulmate but
the first thing you should be worrying
about is your life and the ones
that actually care about you a lot.

more foodie friends for me
to try to eat me
crack!
goes your tooth
be careful around me
I’m as fierce as a real t-rex could be
I wake up
just a couple dreams
I’m sad but then my face beams
I’ll just go back to sleep
I may still be human but
I’m still a Dino at the core.

Josiah R.

BOOM! BANG! Oh? Sorry that’s just my “friendly”
pianist.
I am a piano, the next time the “friendly” pianist
messes up they’ll probably have to get another
piano.
I am a piano, I’m slowly starting to break

I am a piano, I don’t even work anymore my new
