Do You Have a Favorite Sound?

For my third sessions at Kozminski, 4th graders viewed a video of Theresa the Songbird performing her poem, “You So Black.” Students shared their favorite lines in the performance; and then we thought about using the senses of sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing, and feeling when writing poems.  One student recognized that onomatopoeia is when we imitate certain sounds when writing about them; for example: buzzzzz imitates the sound of a bee. From there, we wrote our own sound poems.

5th graders began exploring the idea of masks and the many reasons for wearing them. We looked at cultural masks from around the world, and then images of makeshift masks that people around the world created and wore during the beginning of the pandemic. We read and discussed the poems “Minstrel Man” by Langston Hughes, and “We Wear the Mask” by Paul Laurence Dunbar, as an introduction to ideas for next week’s writing session.

What I like to do outside
By Phoenix B.

I hear the wind going whoosh
when I go in the shade
I hear bees buzzing.
Sometimes it makes me run away
Because I am afraid of bees
Sometimes I hear people walking by
Their feet go bang bang bang
I hear birds chirping
I wonder what they are trying to say?
I hear raindrops sometimes going
Splat splat as they hit the ground
