For a final project, students used magazines and created cut-up poems! They used ‘found language’ and images to create new meanings. Here are some ‘in action’ shots of student hands working away!
Lesson Note: Creative Artist guru, Julia Cameron, says the part of us that creates art is about 7 years old. And so, it is no surprise that, with scissors in hand, even the most serious student finds themselves oddly enjoying this activity. ‘Language shapes our experiences, ‘ visual artist Adam Pendleton told the NY Times in 2018, ‘or it gives new shape… to the things we experience.’
Visual poet-artist Keith S. Wilson says this about visual poetry: Keith S. Wilson: ” I’m interested in a sense of play. In many of the understandings of that. Play means wiggle room, and I’m interested in that–in one’s placement space allowing for more than one understanding of something. And play implies a sense of freedom and even joy sometimes, which sometimes comes through movement through space. But play can also invoke discipline and intentionality as well, as when one plays an instrument.
