The poets from Ms. Pannells’ class learned about the structure of a poem by reading “Chicago” by Carl Sandburg. They dissected the poem into lines, lyrics, and stanzas. They also analyzed how Carl Sandburg shifts the tone and mood of the poem. The poets then wrote their own poems about the city of Chicago and practiced shifting their tone and mood about same city. In the first stanza they were asked to write about some of the negative things they know about Chicago, in the second stanza they wrote about some of the positive things. Enjoy!

Cutting trees is damaging the air for us

Charity is good for people who have no place to go.
Protection is good for people because so that nothing bad can happen to them.
The warmth is good because some people can get only get jobs when it’s warm.
Clean air helps us to have clean lungs so that we can breathe well.
