Celebration and Slam!

Alas, two weeks ago we closed out a stellar term of poetry with Bronzeville Classical’s 3rd and 4th grade students! On our final day, we didn’t write poems; instead we watched slam performances from a number of young poets, including Australian slam poet Solli Raphael. We had fun scoring each performance and giving our final justification for why.

For now, I leave you all with a few final poems from our students to leave you with:

Candyland by Morgan B., 3rd grade

sweet is nice
sour is not
candy can make your teeth rot
but enjoy candy
be the candy
enjoy life keep it
love like candy
love the candy?
eat the candy
candy either sour or sweet it’s
gonna be nice so just eat it.

Dogs by Gianna, 3rd grade

Dogs here dogs there
dogs everywhere

Dogs have long hair. dogs have
short hair.

Dogs are big. Dogs
are small. Dogs are skinny.

Dogs are fat. Dogs are
fluffy.

Blackout Poem by Lanyla, 3rd grade
