Can Poetry Change an Event?

In Ms. Mild-Thomas’s 6th grade class, we read Eve Ewing’s “Four Boys on Ellis [a re-telling],” in which Ewing creates a new, magical, and freeing ending for an instance of racism.  We had a powerful conversation about the ability of poetry to actually make change. We wrote our own poems with new endings.

Pounding…

-Sara
I ran to my mom with the MOST excitement.`
As I come closer I get slower and slower…with these words that come out my mouth, “may i go to the store?”my heart is beating fast..and faster as the minutes pass. stand in the silent room with the only sound of my  heart pounding.

then my mom muebles the word…no. In that moment my heart DROPPED.

The big smile on my face is gone. All the excitement in my body is gone.
Imagine.
While I walk away I close my eyes, I imagine the moment all over again with a little SPARKLE.

When I close my eyes I see myself talking to my mom telling me I can go to the store…hearts appear in my eyes and my heart is all the way in space.

I ask which store I’m allowed to explore my options..she says any store i would like.

Me standing there confused, I say “what’s the twist” she says “nothing, there’s no twist” my jaw drops out of earth.

[I saw a homeless man in the streets]

-Jocelyn M

I saw a homeless man in the streets. All the people passed by and did nothing. I felt so bad

I wanted to cry because of how bad I felt. I gave him a blanket. The blanket was magical and it gave him money! Everytime He wrapped it around him it gave him money and every time he laid down  with it, it gave him things he wished for like food and clothes! When I went back to see how he was doing I saw how happy he was with all the stuff he had. I saw the big smile he had on his face.

Un Turista

-Samuel
