“blue is a welcoming sky”

For our 6th sessions Twain 3rd graders turned their attention to using sensory details to describe color. Our key term was METAPHOR, and we practiced removing the words “like” and “as” from similes to see what kinds of phrases were left. Our example poem was “The Color White” written by Ka’layla D., a fourth grader from another school. As we read the poem we looked for clues that the poet used their senses (- seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching; as well as feelings/emotions -) to paint the color white using words. We worked together to connect our senses to the color blue before students selected colors to brainstorm and write first drafts of poems.

blue.

blue for me is feeling
tired.

I see blue on our uniforms
everyday
blue is the sound of rain
blue is cotton candy, so soft
blue is when you are sad when you
trip on a rock and hurt your
knee.

Aislinn C.

Baby green is a fluffy rug
its sound is birds chirping
it has the smell of peppermint

Baby green has a taste of a
green apple. its texture is a soft
pillow and its feeling is a calm one.

The color red
by Sofia C.

Red is the
texture of a cardinal’s fur.
Red is the taste of
candy. Red is the smell of a
flower.

Brown
by
Victoria G.

The dirt looks wet and brown in rain
Brown is the sound of birds they sing a pain
cookies are always brown, they always smell the same
a pretzel brown and salty always eat it at a game
Bread, soft, warm it always gets the love
Brown is okay and it will always be the game.

Blue
(collaboration)

your eyes are a blue sky
or the taste of sour blueberries
or edible slime

sadness is a blue sky
on the day my cat died

when you go outside
without a coat
blue is the color of the
cold you get
that makes you sneeze.
