“big kids sound like brown bears roaring”

For our 3rd sessions Swift 2nd graders talked about comparisons. We tried to look at pairs of very different things to find similarities in color, texture, shape, size, and feeling. After examining similes written by 3rd graders, such as “my clothes are itchy like a Christmas tree,” students brainstormed substitutions for Christmas tree such as dog’s fur, and bird feathers. Instead of “big kids sound like a loud horn that keeps talking”, students came up with new comparisons such as: big kids sound like brown bears roaring, instruments in an orchestra, and eagles calling to each other. Enjoy some of the comparisons students came up with working independently.

Xena

My hair is as curly as
pasta.
As curly as a slinky
And as very very very
very dark brown like my
eyes.

Ishan

Teardrops are wet like the
lake. The lake makes me relax
because it is very peaceful. The
peaceful lake is relaxing to watch
the lake’s waves.

Faristamo

My scooter is fast like a rabbit
My friends are kind like cats
Ice cream is sweet like candy
I feel happy like when
animals are playing.
Flowers are pretty like the
color pink.

Lamiyah

teardrops are wet as the ocean
there may be sharks
there are lakes in my eyes when I cry
teardrops are wet, teardrops are water
and lakes or ponds

A flag is as wavy as a stream
cooling itself.

A flag is as smooth as a strawberry
smoothie drink that tastes like
a unicorn floating up at the sky

Alyson

Roses smell good
like perfume.
A star is bright
like a sun.
