Becoming Famous @ Shoesmith 5th & 6th Grade

In their eighteenth virtual lesson, Shoesmith 5th and 6th graders explored the meaning of fame. They were asked, “What is fame?” For students fame means popularity, celebrated for an achievement, being remembered for something important. Students mentioned real and fictional famous individuals such as Beyoncé, Billie Eilish, Kobe Bryant, Harry Potter, Scarlett Witch, and Naruto.

Together we read and discussed the poem “Famous,” by Naomi Shihab Nye. In her poem Nye uses metaphors to compare the idea of “fame” to various objects and living things. The river is famous to the fish/ The cat sleeping on the fence is famous to the birds watching him from the birdhouse/ The tear is famous, briefly, to the cheek.  Towards the end of her poem Nye describes how she wants to be famous like a pulley or buttonhole. Not because it did anything spectacular/ but because it never forgot what it could do. Nye believes people can be famous for spreading kindness and just by being themselves.

Inspired by Naomi Shihab Nye students wrote poems describing what they wish to be famous for. Please enjoy this week’s poems by these famous young poets.

What will I Be Famous For?
By Victoria G.

What will I be famous for?
I don’t know the answer to that question YET
Who knows maybe I might show some aggression
In a film
Or maybe I could try some dancing
Maybe I could try singing then winning
A sport or I will be in court
To see who is guilty or innocent
Or I might go to the airport
To be a pilot or styling someone’s hair
I don’t know what I will be in the future
But I have some ideas
I want to be as famous as a finger is to the phone
