April Is For Poets

April is National Poetry Month! For their twenty-second week of poetry Hale 3rd-5th graders are celebrating all things poetry. On Tuesday we read the poem “March 31st,” by Amy Ludwig VanDerwater. In her poem VanDerwater uses rhyming couplets to describe how poets get ready for National Poetry Month. ”Twas the night before April, when all through the land/every poet was writing, at keyboards by hand/gathering words for thirty days’ time/ for Poetry Month, for rhythm, for rhyme.” Together we wrote a group poem about how we can get prepared to celebrate National Poetry Month.

On Wednesday we explored more wonderful things about April, by reading “April Rain Song,” by Langston Hughes. In his poem Hughes uses repetition to describe rain showers in April. “Let the rain kiss you/ Let the rain beat upon your head with silver raindrops/Let the rain sing you a lullaby.” Students came up with their own individual songs about April.

Please help us celebrate National Poetry Month, by reading these amazing poems. Also shout out to the April Birthday Crew. My birthday is in April, and I discovered that some students and their siblings have birthdays in April too. Happy birthday to Marco, Aiden, and Ava.

How We Celebrate National Poetry Month
By Hale Elementary 3rd-5th Graders

Poets feeling confident about their rhymes
from their old times.

He was writing with a light,
then he was a good person at night.

The poets wrote at night.
and then had a word fight.

They took out their pencils and paper
and tried to hide it from the poet caper.

Hidden words in my eye beam.
it all happened in a dream.
