Allusions: “Whenever I see a heart, crown, and a trident…”

This week we talked about allusion! We read a poem by Nikki Giovanni, brainstormed our own allusions, and then students used their own brainstorms to write a poem about allusion in whatever way they wanted! Many students followed Nikki Giovanni’s lead and wrote about music, but others wrote about TV shows, books, and other things. Have fun reading their incredible poems!

Me and Myself

by Jacqueline

I love me myself and I

Sometimes I always can’t love myself

Cause other people don’t love me

So I change and change myself

My music changes my style changes

but my brain says

Don’t care what people say

Me is Me I can’t change myself

because if I change other people don’t

love me.

so always love me or don’t

I don’t care

Just know I never change me for you.

Purple, blue, and red

Malery D.

Are my favorite colors

not just cause they are pretty

They also represent three of my favorite characters

Whenever I see a heart, crown, and a trident

I think of them

When I see a H, M, and S

I think of them

Most people don’t know who they are

or where they come from.

But these three come from an album

that I love and adore.

Many people ask “Who’s the artist?”

His name is Chonny Jash

So when people ask me

“What’s your favorite color?”

I say …

Me

by Emily S.

I love Music

Just how my cat Eleanor loves Ham.

Depeche Mode is a band I was raised with

I also love the things about me, the deaths

of my pets have affected me but I keep going.

Lilian is my favorite song.

Precious jewels weren’t found in schools.

Explains how good songs are hard to find in the ordinary.

Scream and Good Burger are some of my favorite movies.

Wisconsin is one of my favorite places and most nostalgic.

Knowing you can’t lose what you don’t have.

The Things I Could Do

by Gabriel D.

I could travel in time

Albert Einstein would help build the machine

But he sold my rank

So I binge-watched Lord of the Rings

and listened to the

entirety of Lord of the Rings

I could do all this.

to a green place. Jungle breeze

has great mysteries.
