I’ve reached the end of my residency here at Perez, and another school year draws to a close. For our last class, we celebrated by having an in-class poetry reading, where everyone had a chance to read their favorite poem in front of the class. It was a great way to end the residency by sharing some of the amazing work students had created.
It was such an immense pleasure to be with these two amazing classes of sixth graders for 20 weeks! My favorite part of working with students this intensively over a period of time is watching their progression as writers. The way they start to ask questions differently, the way they are able to think and discuss a poem critically, and of course, the brilliant poetry that starts to emerge from even the most hesitant students. Watching them grow into great writers is what it’s all about. I want to give a huge thank you to our partner educators, Ms. Caplan and Ms. Murray for their support. I’m lucky to get to work with phenomenal educators and I learn so much from them. Congratulations to Olivia and Martina, and Ryan and Mayte who represented Perez at our Winter and Spring all-schools reading! And a huge round of applause to my student poets! I’m beyond proud of all the hard work you put into your writing, and it was such a treat reading your work week after week. Have a great summer everyone!
