For our second session of poetry, it was a gray rainy Wednesday but just like after a rain shower there’s a chance of spotting a rainbow. Twain 4th graders discussed how colors can express various emotions and thoughts. Usually, people associate anger with red, or green with jealousy. Blue, which is one of my favorites, seems to be the most popular color from all 4th grade classes, representing sadness, but also calmness and peace.
In her poem, “A Yellow Memory,” Amy Ludwig Vanderwater uses the color yellow to describe her memory of having iced tea with a lemon slice, at a restaurant with her grandmother as a child. The grandmother who doesn’t like lemons, gives her lemon to the poet, I took it and tucked it behind my two lips/ Sucking sweet sunshine, I said, “Look at me!”/ My grin was a lemon/Grama laughed/ I laughed too. For the poet, the image of lemons gives her a warm, happy memory about spending time with her grandmother, that she will cherish always.
Inspired by Vanderwaters poem, Twain 4th graders wrote their own memories, using a color to paint a story from their past.
Please enjoy these colorful poems below.

A Red Memory
by Mikail B.
My phone was red. It was an iPad 13.
I had all my stuff on there,
but when I was coming home,
a dog ran up on me.
I ran away from it.
It did not chase me,
but I dropped my phone.
I went back to get it.
It was broken,
but I got it fixed now.
A Purple Memory
By Ava D.
I was in my room watching TV.
Suddenly, I heard a squeaking noise.
I didn’t know what it was, so I turned
off the TV and went to look.
My dog was playing with her
purple toy.
I said, “Ellie, you made me scared.”
I was about to yell at her but I just
couldn’t. Her tail was wagging,
and she was just too cute to get
yelled at.
I headed back to my room,
then I saw a pot of lavender.
They were so pretty.
A Sad Gray Memory
By Sophie.
A while ago my gray and white cat
named Ella passed away.
I was either 6 or 7 and I was
super sad and I still miss her.
She was furry and super nice.
She helped me when I cried.
I still miss her.

Blue Memory
By Julian E.
One blue memory I had was when I
was eight years old. It was my first time
eating a blue airhead. I felt like I was
in an island full of blue airheads.
It was my favorite candy ever since,
I tasted it. It tasted like blue cotton
melted but even better!
A Black Memory
By Diego A.
There are so many things you can do with black.
you can read a black book or pay a black Gameboy!
But wait there is more! You can wear a black hat
or pet a black dog. You could draw with a black
crayon or either ride a black slide, or play
with a black phone.

My Color is Black
By Mikayala R.
I remember seeing a black cat
and thinking, I can touch that cat.
When I eat dark chocolate
it reminds me of the black cat.
Even when I smell chocolate
I think of the black cat.
I hear the black cat walking
past the cat litter box.
The box scoops up the poop
and puts it in a bag.
The Blue Memory
By Emilia T.
The ocean was quiet, people were shouting.
We unpacked, the waves came up and down.
It was like they wanted to get out, but went
back in.
I went back in the waves, it felt like
a big hug.
After I ate fruit, then I dived right
in and went down and deep,
and came up.
I felt calm.

A Miss Joy Blue Memory
by Ezra C.
I remember the second week of poetry.
We were writing memories, but it has
to be about colors.
I didn’t know what to write!
But then, I looked at Miss Joy.
She had a blue shirt!
She inspired me to write this poem.
So, if you are reading this, think about
someone you love and think about
a color you remember.
