Students read a student poem that used personification to talk to a star before trying their hands at their own poems addressing something… bigger than themselves, while using words from legendary poet/teacher Kim Addonizio’s word bank below!
Mirror
Smoke
Angel
Sizzle
Burn
Blanket
Fold
Dark
Light

I wonder
Where do you go
When dark is gone
Are you still there
Hiding when the
Light is here
Or are tucked in your
Bed with a comfy blanket
How much does it
Burn when your
Body filled of fire touches
Another
If you have a crush on another star
Do you blush with smoke
Or do you fold out of shyness
Being this bright
You might’ve been
Touched by an angel
Does every star look
Different like humans
Down here
Or do they all look like
You’re looking into an
Endless mirror
How it feels to be a star
By: Kevin C.
How does it feel to float in space
To shine so bright in the night’s sky?
How does it feel to be so wide
With burning light, you cannot hide?
How old are you, and do you know
What are you made of fire or glow?
Do you feel hot from where you are
Way up above a watching star

Glimmering Hope
By Brandon H.
To the stars in the sky
Are you angels if you fly
Are you hopeful if things are awry
Keep my wishes in your fold
Wings as a blanket to wrap and hold
Our dreams grown to be bold
To the stars in the sky
Are you a light shining to guide our sight
To whom our desires sizzle and burn
But for those who are blind and deny
And keep their heart stern
There’s only smoke to discern
To the stars in the sky
As you shine in the night so high
Are you our salvation to hope
And dream with a wide scope
If one day we are left in the dark
Will you be our dreams’ spark
To the stars in the sky
Are you a mirror to our mind’s eye
And maybe as we all cry
You descend from the sky
A beautiful, shimmering star
And a hope to remember who we are
To the stars in the sky
Remind us that we can fly
And guide those in despair
Salvation for our hopes to dare
And to reflect while we stare
A glimmering hope of whom we share

O star,
You are the brightest star in the sky,
You produce light all day long, not doing much.
Can you talk to other stars? Can you run around in space with your friends?
I am really curious.
You shine in the dark.
And slowly burn away.
Shining above us like a guardian angel.
How does it feel to float for so long? Do you play games in space?
It is like shining a flashlight at a mirror during the night,
Slowly dying.
It’s like using a blanket, folding it on trips, or covering yourself during the night,
The blanket is slowly breaking and tearing.
It’s like how you use a pan, frying things that make a sizzling sound or produce smoke,
The pan will soon break or become unusable.
