Sounds We Hate, Sounds We Love

We all have sounds we adore and sounds that make us cringe. The students of MLA asked themselves what these sounds were for them before we read “Sweet Like a Crow” by Michael Ondaatje. After exploring what similes were, students then created their own similes to describe their favorite and least favorite sounds. From funny to heartfelt, students reflected on the sounds of family members, chips, car engines, and much more.

Ms. Higgins (Group A)

“I hate your voice“
by Leslie G.

You sound like a person chewing
like a dog barking.
Crying like a baby throwing a tantrum.
alarming like a pig being slaughtered, stressed
like a test that is occurring.
Disgusting like a nest of ants crawling.
Moody like a chameleon camouflaging

“Like This“
by Yasmin M.

Rain, beaded like a pearl necklace
taps like fingertips
lands on leaves like soft kisses

“My Sister’s Voice That I Hate“
by Adam H.

Mad Od like a school fight
Loud as a public park
2 babies crying like a baby was left alone
3 old ladies like a grandma yelling non stop
Chains like hitting a wall
Paper like it was able to yell for help.

Ms. Higgins (Group B)

“Fire Alarm“
by Uriel M.

Annoyed as a Voss bottle when it hits the floor.
Scared like a girl screaming for help.
Confused as a mouse in a maze.
Excited like a horse in a horse race.
Angry as a porcupine.
Terrorizing like the aftermath of a new reporter.

“A Screaming V8“
by Brandon R.

Growls like a lion let loose from its cage
Roars like fire with every rev
Screaming with pride
Motivates me to be the king

“Annoying like a“
by Josias N.

Metal scratching is annoying like a baby crying,
as loud as an airplane’s engine starting,
uncomfortable like 3 kids moving awkwardly,
irritating like a bee chasing you,
creepy like walking alone at night,
disturbing as failing a test.

Ms. Sapa

“Crunchy Chips“
by Kimberly G.

Satisfying as completing a puzzle
calming like singing lullabies
enjoyable as getting a massage
tasty like a burger with fries
crunchy as tree bark
crispy like a chicken tender

“Rain“
by Noely N.

You could be calm as a
cloud floating by.
But sometimes turn angry
like the waves crashing into the rocks.
You seem clear as crystals found
in caves.
But can turn the sky dark like
a blackhole in the middle of nowhere

“White Noise“
by Juanpablo M.

White noise feels as cold as a blizzard,
constant as time,
high pitched as a baby screaming,
bland like a slow Monday,
intrusive as spam calls,
unneeded like wisdom teeth
