4th graders create a community of poets!

This week Twain 4th graders celebrated not only the New Year but also the final day of our poetry residency. Our theme for our last week was about community. I asked students, “What is a community?” For 4th graders community means people, neighbors, friends, family, and animals who live and work together and help one another. Throughout our ten weeks together, 4th graders have built a community through poetry.

For our last poem, we read “Meet At the Horizon,” by Matt Goodfellow. In his poem, Goodfellow speaks directly to readers, using repetition to describe different ways people can come together and connect with one another. Let’s chase stars together/ Let’s be proud of our scars together/ Let’s build who we are together/ c’mon, c’mon let’s go!”

Inspired by Goodfellow, 4th graders created class poems, with each student contributing a line to the poems. We also had classroom open mic performances. I bought my blue microphone and speaker and students read their favorite poems they had written during our residency.

I’m so proud of Twain Elementary 4th graders. We have created such a wonderful community of poets during our time together. Also thank you to the students who gave me gifts of poetry and artwork for my last day. I will cherish these gifts always.
