‘Like’ me: Simile and List Poems #2

This week I used the poem, Sweet Like A Crow by Michael Ondaatje, as a jumping off point to discus Simile, Epigraph, and Dedication in poetry.  Students were then asked to compose a poem ‘in praise’ of someone or something using as many colorful similes as possible. They were also encouraged to dedicate the poem to someone. The results were so excellent, that it is a shame you will only see a few examples here. But, never the less…Enjoy!

Dedicated to A Lion
Timothy G.

Your roar is louder than a car’s
transmission
like a firework blowing up in
the air
like a rock falling 100 feet from
the sky smashing into the ground
like stepping on a cat’s tail
like 5 jets roaring past you.

The Mommy Smile
Jossseline A.

Your smile makes me smile
like if you had the meaning of a Rosen flower
that admires many smiles that’s
why I smile but I always admire your
smile…that’s why I called you mommy
PLZZZZ SMILE.

Mrs. Nazimek, 8th Grade
2nd Period

Mom–
Samantha B.

Your hair is as soft as a silk robe
like a furry poodle who just washed its
hair
like hugging a teddy bear
like laying on a cumulous cloud
like taking your favorite blanket
out of the dryer
like Santa’s furry beard
like a village of puppies running into
your arms
as soft as homemade tortillas
you love like you’ve never been hurt before.

To Soccer
Max G.

As lucky as a leprechaun when you score the winning goal of
the World Cup
You are like the end of the rainbow
You are celebrating like it is the forth of July
You are as lucky as my first soccer ball
Your celebration was as loud as a lion’s roar

For Mom
Yesenia P.

you love like you’ve never been hurt.
you worry like it’s a job.
you’re as elegant as a queen.
you’re always happy as a kid in a candy shop.
you’re as sweet as candy.
you’ll be mad as a tiger that’s hungry.
you’re as protective as a Mother bear.

Game Care Network
-Dedicated to GCN
Jacob K.

You’re as nit-picky as a child
who cant decide what they want
you’re funny like the one and only
Bozo the clown, Intelligent as Einstein
As loud and attention grabbing as
an alarm clock with no ‘off’ button,
keen as a hawk hunting for mice
Nostalgic like the Nintendo 64
As creepy and sudden as the wendigo
from Until Dawn, Surprising like none
of the jump scares from Resident Evil 4,
and finally as important to YouTube
as Pewdiepie and his pointless 50 million
subscriber award.

E and A
-Dedicated to ‘Her.’
Anthony S.

You looked beautiful like broad
day light. Your smile shined as bright
as the sun. Your eyes sparkled
like the stars. For all we go together
like peanut butter and jelly, like pancakes
and syrup, like bacon and eggs, and
like the Joker and Harley Quinn. Perfect as a circle on the outside, but torn apart on the inside
like a piece of paper being ripped in half.
