Write A Poem for Someone

We only have a few weeks left in our residency, so for their 8th week of poetry Twain 5th graders thought about writing poems for someone else. Together we read and discussed the poem, “Poem For A Bully,” by Eileen Spinelli. In her poem, Spinelli uses rhymes to speak directly to a bully, who teases and physically hurts others. Your eyes are often sad, although you wear a surly grin/ Sometimes when you stand alone, your ‘mean’ seems worn and thin. Spinelli encourages the bully to find the good that hides deep inside themselves. A few students realized after reading the poem, that a bully is someone who might have been hurt and decides to be a bully because of the sadness and pain they feel.

Inspired by Eileen Spinelli moving poem, students wrote poems for the people, objects, and animals in their lives; expressing their positive or negative feelings they have towards them.

A Poem For Dwight
By Maya J.

You bite me when I don’t feed you.
Even though I get mad at you too.
I take you on walks to lose some weight.
Even though I’m always late.
I don’t always give you treats, but you still
attention, but your still rude.
At this point I think, I’m getting sued.
Even though you hate to travel.
I still wrap you in a towel.

A Poem For Godfather
By Hailey C.

I miss you even when I don’t see you.
I think you’re gone or just in my mind.
But the light in the sun, the dark
in the night but can’t leave me to cry.
When we pray outside the sun will shine.
When a wind passes by and the clouds
come through, we know it’s time to go,
and come inside when he leaves,
I try to remind myself that I’ll see him
next time.

A Poem For Cookie Monster
By Julian G.

You are blue,
but I am a fool.

You are as blue
as a Smurf’s pool.

The reflection of blue
water can’t compare to you.

Your cookies make me melt.
It makes me want to buy
a Gucci belt.

Poem For My Dead Brother
By Luluwa Y.

I think about you every day.
I wish you were around.

I bet you had a warm smile,
don’t let the negative things
come around.

I wonder what you liked,
I hope you always shine.

Just know that I love you,
always shine bright!

A Trustful Friend
By Allyson D.

but sometimes lonely.

You never tell a lie,
when I have secrets you’re
on my side.

You know my songs,
sometimes even sing-along.

Poem For My Little Sister
By Sarai P.

You like to steal my food.
You cry every time.
I tell you to be quiet,
you’re a riot.
You make me angry,
you get me hangry.

You have a brain,
you blame me on everything.

Poem For Alex
By Valeria G.

Tho you don’t have friends,
but you will at the end.
Ela is a trader,
but Heather will betray you.
You will find your own face,
once you go through a maze.

Cut your hair,
as you despair.

(last two-lines credit go to friend Kristen B).

I could make a snow
angel with my grandma
for the last time.

For a Talented Duck

Why not try your luck?

Go before it gets dim.

You’re the best at hockey.
You even beat Chicken Jockey.

Challenge me at chess,
after your important quest.

From Janalya (your bestie) To My Puppy

Poem For Soccer
By Ariel A.

When my mom takes me to the mall,
the first thing I do is buy a ball.

When I’m sad this is the sport,
that makes me glad.

When I score some goals,
I light up all the fans’ souls.

Every time I take a shot.
I shoot with all the power
I got.

Poem For Neymor Jr.
By Adolfo H.

Neymor Jr. my Brazlian King.
I miss when you played with Barca.
You won us leagues.

I miss your Brazilian skills when you
gave Vardid chills.

I miss you at Santos when you cooked,
all the teams while you were being a teen.

I miss your mohawk when you’d talk
trash on the teams.

To My Controller
By Martin R.

When I throw you,
hopefully you have a broom.

If not, I will not be
see you too soon.

Silvery white,
it shines so bright.

I will lose my mind,
to try to find.

A Poem For Sofia C.
By Aria S.

She’s funny and is a comfort
animal like a bunny.

She reminds me of the color blue,
but she gives yellow vibes too!

When I’m crying so much,
I’m filling a bath.
She tries her best to cheer me up
and make me laugh.

When she cries and laughs
it’s like a waterfall,
and she makes us laugh harder
when she fake falls.
