“Where I’m From” – Poetry Kickoff at Legal Prep

For the first week at Legal Prep, students had the opportunity to share more about who they are by writing the poem, “Where I’m From”. The layout for this poem prompted the students to highlight details of their childhood by incorporating imagery in their work.

This poem comes from Javon, a senior in Ms. Wysinger’s class!

“Where I’m From” Poem

I am from loud houses and louder laughs, from brothers fighting in the hallway and getting whoopings right after. I come from my mom dad, teaching lessons without always saying a word, and my grandma and granddad telling “Back in my day” stories. I come from my siblings and friends, running through a park until the street lights came on, hearing my friends say, “You know it’s boys before girls”. I come from Chicago where the sound of the game echoes down the street and every court feel like a stage for us kids. I come from a church call Dennis Church where voice rise together on Sundays and the walls remember every prayer. I remember the smells of pizza until this day because it’s everyone in the house favorite food. I come from 4th of July family reunion where the family shows up and shows out with fireworks and food. Sometimes I just sit and think man I miss being young.
