Wishing With Stars

Ms. Manning’s 4th and 5th graders welcomed me into the school with warm, open arms. Since it was our first time meeting, we started our session with a warm-up name game. Students each shared their names along with words that describe them so I could learn more about their personalities. After settling in, we chatted about what makes poetry so special. A few students shared that poems can have rhythm, while others said they liked rhyming poems. We talked for a little longer and dove into writing some poems of our own. This week, students dreamt big and turned their wants into wish poems. I learned that Ms. Manning’s students have dreams of being the next big computer inventor and the first child in space. Some students want to make the world a better place by ending homelessness. I left our first class inspired by all of the big dreams students have, and can’t wait to learn more about each student. Here are a few of the many great wish poems the 4th and 5th graders wrote.
