Wintery Words

For our 8th session, Swift 2nd graders were learning from home. We read “Winter Poem” by Nikki Giovanni and spent time talking about wintery things.

One student shared that his name, Shishir, is related to winters and cold! And another student talked about what it felt like to see and touch snow for the first time. Some students worked together to begin composing a winter poems combining their ideas and experiences. Others said they are looking forward to writing individual winter poems in our next classroom session!

The Winter Day Group Poem

Chocolate cookies are way better than oatmeal cookies
In winter.
Winter is when outside may be 21 degrees
It makes me shiver with cold

In winter we can build an ice-gloo,
Not an igloo
With snow and ice packed in our mittens

If you drink something minty in winter
It’s cool and refreshing

Chocolate cookies are way better than oatmeal cookies

Winter is when the air sounds like Whooooossh!
In the winter the air makes a whistling sound

In winter we can build a house with snow and ice

When you come inside with snow all over you
It will melt
And if you come inside again and again
It will make a flood, it will make a puddle!

A Winter Poem Student

“Shishir” means “winter” in Nepal, that’s where I am from.

In Shishir, or Winter
It is very snowy
If you’ve never seen snow before
Its soft and flaky
You need to wear extra clothes and
2 pair of socks.
