Winter: Hot and Cold

Bret Harte 2nd graders were back in school for our recent session and our discussion and thoughts were on the season: WINTER. We read Nikki Giovanni’s “Winter Poem.” Some students elected to work in teams, trying to agree on and combine ideas to write poems. Some students imagined themselves as a tree in winter, or a cup of hot cocoa- even a snowman! Put on your hat and mittens and enjoy!

If I Was a Tree Peyton R.

If I was a winter
tree snow would fall on
me. I would be very cold
and I would have no leaves
I would be cold and sad very
sad.

Winter Poem Dimitri W.

Winter is my favorite season
because I can play with snow
make snowballs, catch snowflakes
and make a snowman. If I
was a snowball I can go on a
tree, a tower, a dog, and a house.

My Life as a Snowman Sina D.

I am a snowman. I love to be reborn
because most of the time I am reborn
in a whole different shape! But right now
I am only a foot because whenever someone
comes to finish me, a bully keeps stopping him
or her.

Sweet Hot Cocoa! Ivan H.

I am sweet hot cocoa when
someone is cold they sip
me and they’re warmer than
a fireplace and marshmallows
jump around inside of
me and I cheer people
up. I am the sweetest
hot cocoa of all!

I love snow Veronica G.

I love snow.
My birthday is in winter.
My first time ice-skating
I was able to balance.
I love snow men.
I love snow angels.
I love to ice skate.
I love to sled.
I love to cuddle up in a
blanket near the fireplace.
I love hot cocoa.

I love winter! Andrea A.

I can play with my sister
drink hot cocoa. I could build a
igloo, build a snowman. I love
Christmas movies and opening
gifts, putting up the tree and
decorations. I love winter!

I love winter Gracie B. and Rayne H.

I am a snowperson but I
love to be warm
and I love hot cocoa
and I love marshmallows.
