Where The Heart Is

Hello again! Last week, Carver’s student did a deep dive into more figurative language, this time looking at metaphors in our poetry. Together, we listened to Kanye West’s “Homecoming” and discussed its lyrical content. Students made the connection that the rapper was comparing his relationship to Chicago to a relationship with a girlfriend. Students picked up on a few subtle clues in the song that helped them realize that the song was actually a love song to the city of Chicago.

Next, students wrote poems of their own about a person, place, or thing that feels like home to them. Here’s a poem from one of our students.

Untitled Olivia P.

My home is like a lake

Many places at once

A place where things were taught

Where things were calm

The light in my neverending darkness

The life jacket I needed to keep me afloat

We were like two boats afloat, related by maker but separate by make

Our home was like rain

Sometimes harsh and brutal

But sometimes nice and presice

The after affect was sometimes bright and pretty

But it was often wet and gloomy

Things were always so sad and down, but somehow, you never had me drown
