Where does the stuff of dreams go?

“Where does the stuff of dreams go?” is a line from a poem by Pablo Neruda that 4th graders answered in a collaborative poem a few weeks ago. After identifying personification as the quality in many of the questions, Group 2 responded to a question from another of Neruda’s poems, “What news bursts forth from the leaves of those first spring days?”

Ms. Lehner Group 1 - 4th Grade

"Where does the stuff of dreams go?"

it goes to the back of your brain or
maybe it goes to dreamland, or to the garbage

where does the stuff of dreams go?
it sky-dives to your memory
its like an app on your phone that you accidentally delete
it runs across your body in loops and loops
maybe it swims down to your stomach,
or goes to your Dream Stock, a large room
filled with memory files

maybe it floats into someone else’s ear,
and into their brain
or into the dream galaxy

Group 2 - 4th Grade

"What news bursts forth from the leaves of those first spring days?"

it’s spring
the sun is out, more
it rains all the time

the leaves are bringing forth the news that
even though the sun is out, it still feels like fall
they are calling on the phone with gossip, saying
“I’m glad the rain is here
I’ve been thirsty
please hurry, we need more light.”

they come on channel 9 news
dressed in fresh green and red blossoms
smelling of mint, saying
“We have enough beverages.
Let’s have a party.”
