What Matters to Me is Metaphors

Greetings West Park poetry friends and followers! This week’s lesson revolved around metaphors and important things. We discussed the difference between metaphors (which compare two unlike things as if they are the same) and similes (a type of metaphor using the words “like” or “as”). Metaphors are sometimes puzzles… they can be tricky to put together or take apart to understand…

In order to come up with some “things” to creatively compare in our writing, we listed things that are important to us, including personal belongings, things found in nature, and things from our neighborhoods. Sandra Cisneros’s poem, “Sky Wearing a Hat,” gave students some food for thought to inspire poems that begin from a metaphor.
