‘what is your sky’: Star Poems

Students wrote poems to the stars, inspired by other star-themed poems. While writing, they were asked to include words from the curated word bank below. Here are some of the stellar results!

“We are stardust brought to life, then empowered by the universe to figure itself out—and we have only just begun.”-Astrophysicist, Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

I feel like

A mirror and

From a foreign country. The Black Blanket is

What I call space

The Black looks dark when I arrive

But When I am

Absent for 12 hours.

I feel like I’m going to lava and a burn

Flowing all over me

I fold myself to be a circle when

I am about to go out.

Light turns us into ghosts like a sizzle

On a patty for burgers

Then respawn with a different

Name or Character.

I have 8 siblings,

5 brothers that smell like fire smoke (Not including

  1. me) and 3 sisters that look like they

Died, but no, they go into

The Sun’s body to take their

Baths there.

We are all different

Including Stars, The

Galaxy, etc.

Star, Will You Answer Me? by Amber E.

I admire how you look like a mirror

But you somehow still have a lot of Smoke covering

So you may be a bit foggy, even though you’re impressively pretty

Because of your light

You happen to make my eyes sizzle

By your burning light

I see you in the fold of darkness

Yet I’m wondering

Are you bright enough to see your way through the cosmos

When people make a wish upon you

Do you actually listen to them

Do you grant their desires or no

When I was in the blanket of darkness

I saw how you rose like an angel from heaven

And is that because they helped create you

I still wonder

How big are you

Are you friends with the Sun and Moon

How are you still glittering above us

You may be pretty

But you are still a wonder to me

Untitled by Jayda D.

The feelings you feel

is like a mirror to me

but the way you

make me laugh is like a sizzle

the burn is my stomach

is like a fire, but when it

goes out there’s the darkness

that eats the smoke that

takes away the light away from

me like when my mom takes

the warm blanket

I talk to you

But you stay silent

I’ve seen books talk more

You shine like a flashlight under a spotlight

To me, you mirror like a spec of dust

only floating up there

Do you burn when you’re by the sun?

How is it up there with the angels?

Star by Daniela B.

how does it feel

to be up there

shining brightly

people wish upon you

but what

do you wish on

what is your sky

can you wish

do you do the same

as us

do you look in the mirror just

like us

do the angels sing to you

will you come down and

show us

how the sky

is
