What is Black?

For our most recent session, Shoesmith considered ideas related to color. We read poems from The Heart of My Palm: Poems by African American Children [by David Adejouma and illustrated by Gregory Christie] and then collaborated as a group to compose 1st drafts of poems about BLACK. Enjoy!

Why do people still have bad feelings about black? Group 1

Black is beautiful
beautiful like butterflies

Black is awesome
awesome like the northern lights
awesome like chicken nuggets that are
absolutely delicious

Black represents the dirt that grows everything

Black is a song

Group 2 4th Grade

the music of jazz, rap, hip hop, and snapping fingers
