We’re not kidding about Kenning poetry
For their seventeenth week of poetry, Hale 3rd-5th grade poets discovered Kenning poetry. Kenning is a word that’s created from putting two unrelated words together. On Tuesday we read my own poem titled, “Joy,” where I used kenning words to describe myself: Uno Master/ Nerd Defender/ Poetry Princess. Students wrote their own kenning words to describe themselves, then we mixed them up, and tried to guess which words belong to who.
On Wednesday we read a kenning riddle by Mark Garry. Garry used kenning words to describe a mysterious animal. Quiet Prowler/ Chicken Stealer/ Hunter Dasher. Hale 4th grader Ferderico R. correctly guessed that the mystery animal was a fox!
Inspired by Mark Garry, students wrote their own kenning riddles. See if you can solve them! The answers to the riddles are below.
