We’re Not Afraid of Dogs and Cats

After weeks of exploring fear and bravery, first graders combined their individual lines into poems telling the world what they are and aren’t afraid of. This week, students got to see one of their poems transformed into an illustrated book!

Note: This post contains image galleries showcasing the student-created illustrated book pages.

I'm Not Afraid of Dogs and Cats Group Collaboration

I’m not afraid of dogs and cats
—they don’t run fast!
I’m not scared of a shark
—they don’t swim fast!

I am not afraid of sharks because
I have a pet baby shark in my pool, and I swim with it!
Baby sharks are not scary
—they’re nice!

Pasando por el campo,
me asustan una espina, un caballo, un árbol, y una serpiente.
I’m not afraid of rats,
and I am not afraid of dogs.

I’m not afraid of swimming in the water,
but I’m scared of lightning and sharks.
No me asusta el agua
—porque solo es un agua.

I’m not afraid of swimming because
2 girls taught me how to swim.
I am afraid of a wave
coming toward my boat.

No me asusta ni un ganso, una serpiente, un niño,
un gato, un barco, un perro, una abeja, una mariposa…
¡ni el sol!
(pero sí me asustan los gatos y las ardillas)

I’m not afraid of wolves.
I’m not afraid of monsters.
I’m not afraid of movies.
I am only afraid of a scary movie
when it’s a true story.
