“We Are from the World”

Fresh from spring break, Haines after-school poetry group met for a round table reading of Because You Matter by Tami Charles. From there, we returned to the “Who I Belong To” lesson created around Janet S. Wong’s poem, “Face It.” Students collaborated to build a group poem. Enjoy!

We Are From the World by Peiqi, Chun, Zariyah, Noah, and Jaxon

We were born in places like Illinois, China, and
California, where it’s hot.
If you look into our eyes you may see a Dad or little sister

If you see us, don’t judge us
Sometimes we talk like our
brothers or sisters
We have long heads
and silly laughs
and bad behavior

We are from Chicago
a city of pizza, ice cream,
root beer floats, and lovely people

We are made of magic and love,
sports we play, creativity, more love, and music
The skies are filled with cotton candy, french fries,
golden nuggets, clouds and pepperoni
And sounds of music, horns blowing, people cooking,
owls hooting, and birds chirping
fill the air.

We are from Haines Elementary
a family of students.
We are happy to learn subjects
and new things.
We learn
to do better math.
We learn to act right.
