The Time Capsule

Time capsules are important for how they both help us reflect in the present and teach others in the future about what is important to us at a specific time in our lives. This week the 7th and 8th graders of Waters created their own time capsule poems after reading my poem “The Time Capsule.” While some students reflected on just their past school year, others chose to create a poem encompassing their entire lives up to this point. Unbury the time capsules below to learn what meant the world to our young people in 2026.

My friends said “Hey!” now

I got cash to spend

I thought of Zombie ideas

I wish I could finish in the future

I wonder what it holds.

Unique Aria M.

I want to remember the trips

Where we bonded

and explored the city

we’ve all yearned to see

or the vlogs

trying to capture the moments

we don’t want to forget

the letters

we can’t wait to open or

my friends

who talk

and talk

and talk

but mainly I want to know that

the missed opportunities

or lesons learned

are what has made my experience

unique

Time Capsule Avery W.

A time capsule will have

Julian’s busted hightop Converse

we replaced captured treasure with for

capture the flag

because all we had were nickels in

our pockets and couldn’t buy them

ourselves

There was no use in putting them

under the swingset mulch

cuz you could smell them from

red team’s safe zone.

You’ll find 9:00pm fireworks when

mom was asleep

that hit you so hard

you thought it was your last 4th

of July

while you died laughing

on Mr. Kemp now burnt lawn.

You’ll find silenced laughter when

10:00pm comes ’round

and all the parents yell

“Get home and you better not

walk alone!”

Time Capsule Rocky R.

My time capsule

will contain a gold keychain

normally rested on my hip, it will reside in my

time capsule

My time capsule

will hold my favorite hat

Black and Red, I’ve seen stranger things in hats

My time capsule

will have Pim crammed in there

he’s pretty cheerful so he won’t mind

no more enchanted forest

My time capsule

will hold a town named Carcosa

a King named Bastun

and unlimited knowledge, but crossing the line

A gift

Gifts of love

Physical gifts

Or the gift of belief

As a kid the tv screen called to me.

From blue light to in person.

Star Wars talked to me

Republic Gunships in Lego floating in my room

The cloud clearing to reveal my mow cow

t-shirt.

BigXtha…

Memory

Memories of the past

And the belief

Everything will believe

Everything will all work itself out

3 feet deep

and 10 years older

pretend you can sleep

without hugging the bear

tell me your wrists

don’t mis the charm bracelets

and you remember

how to make

Grandma’s cookies

they’re oatmeal raisin

by the way, in case

you forgot

do you know when

you last saw Charity

or is she 3 feet under

now too

is she buried away

pushed down with your feelings

as the fireflies come out

to play

did the petals get shredded

under the fossils

hidden below the wishing tree

and the colored beads

still have strings attached

as they were meant to be
