The Story of a Name

This week kicked off our first week of Hale’s summer poetry program. Students got warmed up with a few exciting games of Simon Says and Four Corners before reading name poems. We talked about the origin of our names together. Some of us were named after family members, and other people were named after famous celebrities. Then, we wrote individual and group poems of our own and performed them in front of the group. Check out a few of them below:

Name Poem Robyn, Osmar, Diego, and Ricardo

Our names are the first thing we’re taught.

Everyone is wearing masks, but people still know I’m Ricardo.

I’m Osmar, but everyone calls me Oscar or Omar.

I’m Robyn the person, not robin the bird.

I’m Diego and my name is short.

Alexa Alexa

My name comes from my mother

An An

“An” is my name

Descendant of the last king and queen

originates from Vietnam…

My grandpa give it to me because

he saw the great in it.

The name descendant means to help

and carry.

I wonder what they see in me?

Did the name An have its own story?

But no matter what I will continue

to be the “An” that people know.
