This week was the 10th and final poetry session for Twain 5th graders for the school year. Since, I know the 5th graders are fantastic artists, to celebrate our last day we explored concrete poetry. Concrete poetry is when the words of a poem form the shape or image that reflects the subject of the poem. Together we looked at examples of concreate poems, including Sabrina Guo’s poem, “Steam,” where she describes drinking tea on winters days with her mother. The lines of Guo’s poem are shaped like a mug of tea with steam rising.
I asked 5th graders to choose their favorite poems from our residency and create concrete poems based on the poems they chose. I was blown away by these magnificent masterpieces.
