The Name Game

Each of our names tell a story about us, and last week Sayre’s 8th graders dug deep into their origins. Some of us are named after loved ones, and others have names inspired by our mother’s favorite TV shows. After reading To All The Little Black Girls with Big Names by Sha’Condria ‘iCon’ Sibley, we wrote our own name poems. Check out some of them below:

MiliQ MiliQ

My name is MiliQ
not Malik not Millik
If you gon say my name,
say it right
My name is different
I ain’t met nobody name
spelled the same as mine
Mili capital Q
My name stands for king
My dad’s mean God
And my sister’s mean gift from God
We all different

Itzel Kamila Itzel

Itzel de una diosa
de la medicina milagrosa
Como si una lucesita
en la tarde brillara.

Mi nombre de origen maya
representando poderro
sin fatiga ni desgarra,
nunca se apaga.

Kamila que mantiene el fuego
siempre resplandece
a pesar del entierro
sigue y crece sin destierro

Se mantiene con Dios
en todos los tiempos
Esta al lado de Jesus
Sin perder momentos

Becoming S SeRenity

My name means peace. Like a cozy winter day.
SeRenity is 8 letters like 8 spider legs

SeRenity is a chapter in which you can read.
80 pages long.
Like a book on a tree, a frog on a log.

My Name Azalia

My name is Azalia
Not “Ay-zai-lee-uh”
I’m a delicate flower
with beautiful pink colors
My name is Azalia
Beautiful and unique with a story
I’m also Zali
with my family
Being with comfort
I’m also Angel
with the stories
and good memories
I am Azalia,
the flowers my mother
got from her father
and thought
“I’m gonna name my daughter that”
I am Azalia

Hi My Name is... Tafolla

Hi my name is…
Tafolla
Not Tafalla
Not Tquisha
Not anything else
Just Tafolla

Who Am I? Zoelani

My name is Zoelani,
Not Zo-laney Zoey-lani Just Zoelani
I’m an abundance of life with lots to spare
My friends call me Zoe
My bsf calls me Zozo
I like my name because its unique
Even though I can’t find it on keys
I am Zoelani, Zoe, Zozo,
Zoelani is me.
