Take it slow and you will get it done.

For our lucky #9 session of poetry, 4th graders worked on to complete, edit, and revise poems they wrote during our residency. Taking the time to rewrite gives a poet new ideas, an opportunity to omit what’s not working, create new lines, add vivid imagery, to help improve a poem.

Together we read the poem, “Turtle,” by Christian A., a former 6th grader at Shoesmith Elementary. We discussed Christian’s poem before rewriting, “While we rush everything, to get it done but a turtle is slow and calm.”  Then we viewed the wonderful changes he made to his poetic lines after rewriting “While we rush everything, to get it done but a turtle is slow and calm. /Take it slow, take it slow. Sloooooowwwww. Take it slow and you will get it done. Just like an artist using an extra touch of paint, including descriptive language can help give extra pizzazz to a poem.

Just like the wise turtle, students took it slow and calm, when revising their poems. Please enjoy these new and improved poems.

A Blue Memory Sarahi H.

The blue memory:
I was in the ocean floating.
Something touched my leg,
it was a beautiful seashell.

I picked it up,
I can hear the waves.
It sounds beautiful.
It looks like a purple day.
I go find more.
A ton of seashells are there.
1,000 types!

There are sparkly ones.
There are squiggly ones.
There are funny ones.

Time to go, I hear
my mother say.
I go, bye bye
seashells.

The End.

A Poison Tree Lianna U.

I was angry with my friend.
I told my wrath,
my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe:
I told it not, my wrath
did grow.

And I watered it, in seconds
it grew, but it grew more
and more.
The wrath came out,
and it was all over me
A poison tree was
taller than me.
I saw apples hanging,
waiting to be picked
for kindness.

But that feeling stopped,
when I realized that I
saw the tree’s leaves
becoming a light green.

I smiled as kindness
was making trees green.

Lavender Memories Mackenzie M.

The color lavender represents a lot of things. Like boredom and the one scary feeling, when you get tucked in, but still scared of the imaginary “monsters,” under your bed as a kid.

Lavender is the color of your tears, that rolled down your cheeks as you realize you can’t go back to being a kid. But maybe in the next life, live in the moment, while you can, because you’re gonna miss it when it’s gone.
Cherish the memories, the Lavender memories.

Remember the Lavender mustache after drinking your class of milk with cookies?
Remember when your parents actually seemed… happy? Now they barely smile and their backs ache. They workday and night slaving away, just to buy you a couple of birthday presents.  Love them, don’t argue.

Cherish the memories, the Lavender memories.
