Spoken Word Pt. 1

Kozminski’s 4th and 5th graders took some time to learn more about spoken word poetry and what makes it so dynamic. Before we dove in on day one, we warmed up with some tableau. In groups, students acted out scenes like capturing a lion escaping from the zoo and alien invasions. After our scenes, we watched a few favorite Brave NewVoices performances. Then, students drafted their own poems to begin prepping for their Mahogany Club premieres. Check out a few below:

Phantom Darryl T.

I’m like a ghost but i

Don’t need a host

You can see me but

Not be me

I come out at dark

And to mark my spot

I can go through walls

Halls floors doors you

Can find me in the dark

You can see me with a

Spark, I’ll be waiting in

The dark.

Art Goodness A.

Painting calms me

Down

I paint or when

I am mad I paint.

Like when

I see a white canvas

just sitting there.

I paint and spill

out my creativity

on that canvas.

Painting is like you

meditating but with art.

You can express

your feelings on

just one canvas or another.

5th Grade

I Love Pizza Azariah F.

If I see pizza I automatically get hungry.

I ask my mom for pizza then she will say no.

Then I ask her one more time and she will still say no.

Then I just start to think about it till I fall asleep.

I love the cheesy taste of pizza.

I love the taste of the bread on the pizza.

And I just love pizza.

My Momma Darrion W.

My momma is as sweet as cupcakes straight out the oven.

My momma is fun as playing with a dog

My momma is always happy like a kid playing outside

My momma is as cool as someone doing a backflip

My momma food is so good as some hot wings on a Friday
